Hello TSMS Families,
Whew! Bitter cold at times the past couple of days. And yet today is so mild. And tomorrow is supposed to be weirdly warm with downpours and crazy winds, so it's hard to know what to make of the whole thing. Today I spent the morning with half of the sixth grade at the NYC Center for Space Science (see below) and it was awesome. They have a really great mission simulation of a Halley's Comet space study... some of the kids are Mission Control and some go to the International Space Station and the rooms are all decked out with all kinds of tools and computers and headsets to communicate between Mission Control on Earth and the kids in the space station and everyone has a job (navigation, life support, working on the probe, etc.). We got caught in a meteor shower and our humidity level reached dangerously low levels, but we found the comet and got a sample for analysis. Pretty great. I missed the other half of the day where students are building and testing airplanes, unfortunately, but it was a nice trip. Clock is ticking toward the end of 2008--- the last day of school before winter break is two weeks from today. Help your children keep their focus if you see them starting to get caught up in the holidays too early, please! Here's the news of the week: SLT... Tonight Tuesday, December 9 at 5:30pm is the next School Leadership Team meeting. All members of the school community are welcome. EARLY DISMISSAL... Tomorrow Wednesday, December 10 is the next early dismissal day. Students will be dismissed after lunch at 1:45pm and there will be NO After School activities. If you would like your children to stay through the end of regular school day (3:20pm), but have not gotten a permission slip, you can email Nataly at natalybraginsky@gmail.com. ICE SKATING... This Friday, December 12 is the 7th grade Ice Skating Trip to Wollman Rink in Prospect Park, Brooklyn. (Next Friday, Dec 19, the 8th grade will finish it up.) Students will have morning classes and leave for the rink at 11 am. They need to bring a bag lunch and dress warmly. Remember hats and gloves-- the whole trip, aside from the subway, is spent outdoors in the cold. Students will return to school by 3:30pm. 6TH GRADE IN SPACE... This Thursday, December 11, the other half of the 6th grade will be taking their trip to the NYC Center for Space Science Education as part of their mass, drag, and gravity study. They will be designing investigations into the physics of flight and will get to work as a community of scientists in a spaceship Challenger mission simulation. Students must leave school promptly at 9:10 am and will return by the end of the day. Please pack a bag lunch and make sure your children are wearing comfortable shoes--- it's about a 30-minute walk from school. PICTURE DAY... Next Tuesday, December 16 is Picture Day. It will start early in the schoolday, so be sure to be on time. All money and forms should be brought directly to Magda in the main office no later than next Friday, December 12. If you have any questions, please give Magda a call at x3182. PTA... Next Wednesday, December 17 at 6pm is the next PTA meeting. We will be discussing several fundraising opportunities being looked into. We will also be electing our Title I representative-- if you think you may be interested, please contact Rosemary or Ting at rq1 at aol.com or yih at att.net, respectively. And as always, much fun will be had. Sonhando is working on some good jokes. Hope you can join us. WINTER SHOWCASE... Next Friday, December 19 at 5pm is the After School Winter Showcase taking place in and around the Auditorium. Everyone is welcome. Come see the great work TSMS students have been doing in After School. There will be performances from Drama, Afro-Caribbean Dance, Music, and a Fashion show as well as artwork hung from the Art Adventures class, student-designed totes for sale from the Fashion class, and new edition of the TSMS newspaper. AFTER SCHOOL LOGISTICS... Next Friday, Dec 19 will also be the last day of this After School session. Friday's Homework Help class will be meeting at its regular time from 3:30 until 4:45pm. Anyone (currently registered for ANY DAY of After School) who would like to attend Homework Help next Friday in order to not have to leave school before the Winter Showcase is welcome to join. There will be no After School activities Monday & Tuesday, December 22 & 23. Registration for the next session will begin the day we return from Winter Break and the classes will begin the following Monday. WINTER BREAK... Wednesday, December 24 to Friday, January 2 is Winter Break. All schools will be closed citywide. School will start back up on Monday, January 5. That's it for now. All best, Devan Tuesday, December 2. 2008TSMS: Tuesday Newsletter, Dec 2

All best, Devan Monday, November 24. 2008TSMS: Tuesday Newsletter, Mon Nov 24Hello TSMS Families, It was wonderful to see so many of you here at conferences last week! The fact that the vast majority of families attend says so much about the commitment of our school community. I hope you found it helpful. If you have any lingering concerns, please get in touch with either me or your children's teachers (if you are missing any emails, they can be found at tsmsonline.org/staff.php). Meanwhile, I miss a newsletter last week and all of a sudden it's winter! Well, today isn't so bad, but this weekend was freezing and the puffy coats definitely seem to have come out to stay. Hope you are all staying warm. Here's the news of the week: THANKSGIVING... Thursday & Friday, November 27 & 28 is Thanksgiving. All schools will be closed citywide. AFTER SCHOOL NEWS... This Wednesday, November 26, there will be NO after school due to the upcoming holidays. Friday, December 19 at 5pm will be the Winter After School Showcase as the first session comes to an end. Thanks so much to Nataly and several involved parents for helping keep our After School program vital this year despite the loss of our partnership. ICE SKATING... The Games brought together over 2,000 athletes from a variety of different sports, all 12 to 15 years of age, from 100 cities representing 50 countries from around the world.
