Humanities Module Two

In the first half of Module 2, the Social Studies curriculum focuses on the institution of slavery in the early and mid-1800s, with particular attention on how people resisted slavery and “How do people gain power?” At the same time, students write personal narratives about moments important to them, with an emphasis on description, inner thinking, and dialogue. Westward Ho.... In the second half of the module, students embark on a journey across the West, to learn about the adventurous history, sometimes invigorating and sometimes agonizing, of the Westward Expansion of the United States. Students explore the perspectives and experiences of the different groups involved in and affected by this time in the country’s history. They watch excerpts of the television drama Into the West to visualize the land and lifestyles of the West. We consider “Who is an American?” and “What is America?” while learning about the difficulties pioneers faced as they migrated West in covered wagons, and the harrowing challenges for Native Americans during this period. Building on the narrative writing skills, students create a diary-writing project from the perspective of a character of the 19th century American West. For Reading Workshop and independent reading, we focus on developing nonfiction reading skills, and we integrate preparation for the reading, listening, and editing portions of the ELA test in January. We continue to expect students to read at least 30 minutes outside of school every day.

Math Module Two

This module, our students are delving into the wonderful world of algebra. They started the module with integers and explored absolute value, what positive and negative numbers really mean, and integer operations. The next part of the module focuses on the relationship of tables, graphs and rules and how to effectively go from one form to another. Students will be involved in a project where they will create patterns using their initials and show these patterns in tables, graphs and rules. They finish the module by moving into the more abstract world of algebra, where they will focus on solving one and two-step equations, substitutions and expressions. This module should give them a sound beginning in algebra, and they will come back to a more in-depth exploration of linear relationships in the spring.

Science Module Two

Module 2: Human Body Systems
What’s inside our Blood?  Are Bones Alive?  What’s so Nervous about the
Nervous System?  What Happens to our Food once we eat it?  Find out more
about these, and other Not-Just-Skin-Deep Questions in….
7th Grade Science---Module 2!
We’ll be…
‡ Pounding out our pulse-rate!
‡ Rappin’ bout our Muscles, Bones, and Joints!
‡ Performing Heart-Racing, Spine-tingling Experiments!
‡ Learning What Makes Our Bodies Work!
And if that doesn’t stimulate your endocrine glands, increase your systolic
pressure, tingle your integumentary system, and fry your nerves—well, Gosh,
are you sure you’re alive?

Art Module Two

As our study of the Elements of Art progresses in 7th grade, we are now doing projects related to color, value, texture and form. During the color study, students learn how to mix the colors of the color wheel as well as learning the relationships between colors. In our form study, after looking at Greek vases and vessels, students try their hand at making their own three dimensional vessel using plaster-embedded cloth, balloons and cardboard shapes. Many of these will be on display down the hallways as they adorn the tops the lockers. Finally, as we study texture, they will be carving a linoleum block and learning to print.

Spanish Module Two

Dear Family, I am looking forward to a great and productive second module. We will continue with the program Realidades1, published by Prentice Hall, to introduce your student to the Spanish language and Spanish-speaking cultures. In grammar, we will be dealing with the present tense conjugation of -AR, -ER and -IR verbs, the conjugation of the verbs SER and ESTAR and the plurals of nouns and articles. The topics we will be covering are the classroom/ school and the food/meals. Our goal is to give students a foundation for exploring and understanding Spanish-speaking cultures and peoples. Through the classroom activities and videos, students will employ critical thinking skills as they compare the Spanish language and its cultures with those of their own community. We hope that your student will become aware of how Spanish is used every day in the real world and that you will be involved with the learning process through projects and activities sent home.

Technology Module Two

During second module in Technology, students build a Microworlds computer game that models one of the human body systems they study in Science class. The project extends the programming skills acquired in the first module and reinforces the content of the Science curriculum. Students work with a partner to research the system of their choice (immune, circulatory, digestive, or nervous). After extensive planning, students map out the characters and interactions for their game, create original graphics, and program in MicroWorlds. The project allows students to make connections between different subjects, develop collaborative working skills, and share their finished project with their peers.

Physical Education Module Two

The 7th grade students are approaching basketball from an intermediate level. The instructions integrate skills like dribbling, passing and shooting outside shots along with vocabulary designed to enhance their ability to play and observe. The students will also continue to explore different modes of conditioning.
